A Day of Fun and Togetherness

Hundreds gathered at The Manor Leisure Centre in Whittlesey on Sunday, 22 June, to celebrate The Big Bash V. This free, family-focused fun day has become a cherished tradition in the Cambridgeshire community.

Among the special guests was The Hon. Frances Stanley DL, the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire. The event featured many attractions, including classic vehicles, live music, and a scooter competition. Families enjoyed a disco and cricket match, along with the much-loved “Big Bash 60+ Slurp,” where attendees savored afternoon coffee and cake. One of the day’s highlights was the presentation of the prestigious High Sheriff Awards. These awards honored local individuals for their exceptional contributions to community life.

The High Sheriff spoke at the opening ceremony and expressed her delight:

“It is such a joy to see the community coming together for a day full of energy, laughter, and local pride. Events like the Big Bash are a testament to the spirit and resilience of Cambridgeshire’s towns and villages. It’s an honour to present the High Sheriff Awards here and to celebrate the extraordinary people who make a difference in our county every day.”

An Inspiring Arrival

In keeping with tradition, the High Sheriff and the Mayor of Whittlesey, Cllr Alex Miscandlon, arrived in style via a classic vehicle from Peel House. They were welcomed by a young VIP prize winner. The ceremony kicked off with a packed schedule of inclusive activities. Attendees enjoyed sensory spaces and indoor sports, highlighting the event's commitment to accessibility. A touching rendition of the National Anthem was performed, adding to the day's emotional significance.
